What is a Workplace Needs Assessment?

by | Feb 2, 2026

A Workplace Needs Assessment is a structured assessment designed to understand how an employee’s neurodivergence or disability may affect them in their role and what support could help them work more effectively.

The purpose of the assessment is not to judge ability or performance. Instead it focuses on understanding how someone experiences their work and identifying practical strategies that remove barriers and support success.

During the assessment, an experienced assessor will usually discuss the employee’s role, their day to day responsibilities and the challenges they may experience in the workplace. This conversation helps identify areas where adjustments or tools could make tasks easier and more efficient.

The assessment also looks at strengths. Understanding how someone thinks and works best helps identify ways they can maximise their abilities while managing the areas that may be more difficult.

Following the assessment, a detailed report is produced. This report provides clear recommendations that can support both the employee and the organisation. Recommendations may include assistive technology, workplace adjustments, coaching, changes to communication methods or strategies for managing workload and organisation.

Workplace Needs Assessments are commonly used to support employees with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, dyspraxia and other neurodivergent profiles, although they can also support individuals with a wide range of needs.

Many employers use these assessments as part of creating a more inclusive workplace. They help organisations understand how to support their staff while enabling employees to work confidently and effectively.

Ultimately the aim of a Workplace Needs Assessment is simple. It provides practical recommendations that help individuals overcome barriers and succeed in their role.
